A spate of hail storms in 2023 led to a spike in applications for roof replacements, according to the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. The inter-governmental agency, created in an agreement between Colorado Springs and El Paso County, issued nearly 66,000 reroof permits, a 173 percent increase compared with 2022.
The permit requests were scattered all across the Pikes Peak region, but the vast majority were in the Briargate area on the west side of Powers, where hailstorms hit the hardest during the summer.
The agency warns that large hail can do more than impact shingles. Unseen damage to the vent cap for gas-fired appliances such as water heater and furnace can lead to life-threatening conditions. If the damage is serious enough, flue gasses will be unable to leave the home and residents can be exposed to deadly carbon monoxide.
